Attention: Christian MOTCH, Dr.

Applications are invited for a postdoctoral position in X-ray astronomy at Strasbourg Astronomical Observatory (France).

The observatory is one of the member institutions of the XMM-Newton Survey Science Center (SSC) which performs the processing of all XMM-Newton observations and carries out survey analysis. Within the consortium Strasbourg has the responsibility to extract and make available to the community archival information for all XMM-Newton fields. It also participates in the SSC follow-up/identification program for the serendipitous X-ray survey with particular emphasis on the galactic plane.

Among the astrophysical topics presently studied in Strasbourg are TTauri and protostars, active stellar coronae, neutron stars, compact binaries, ULXs and AGNs.

In addition to his/her own scientific activities, the successful candidate will actively participate for about one third of the time in SSC related activities; monitoring and testing of the local SSC systems and analysis and interpretation of the X-ray and optical data collected in the framework of the SSC galactic plane survey. There are no teaching duties.

The position is funded by the French spatial agency CNES. It is offered for one year and will normally be renewed for a second year. The starting date is October 1rst 2007, but applications to start a few months later will be considered.

The net salary is approximately 1700 euros/month (1800 if more than two years after PhD).

Applicants should send a CV, bibliography, a statement of research interests and three letters of recommendation to Dr. Christian Motch, head of the SSC group. Completed applications received by September 15, 2007, are assured full consideration. Informal enquiries can be directed to C. Motch (motch@astro.u-strasbg.fr)
